Madeline Smith MSSA,LISW
Co-Owner,Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, Clinical Therapist
-
Madeline Emery is the co-owner of The Counselor’s Couch and a dedicated therapist who is deeply committed to supporting children, adolescents, and families navigating complex emotional experiences. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Youngstown State University, where she graduated at the top of her class. Madeline continued her education at Case Western Reserve University, a nationally ranked graduate program, where she completed her Master’s level training in Social Work with a focus on social work administration and clinical practice.
Early in her career, Madeline worked in foster care services, supporting children who had experienced significant trauma, separation from their families, and disruptions in their sense of identity and belonging. This work shaped her passion for helping young people process loss, build emotional resilience, and reconnect with a sense of safety and self.
Madeline helped establish The Counselor’s Couch after recognizing that many clinical environments did not always allow space for the level of compassion, empathy, and individualized care she believed clients deserved. Her philosophy of therapy centers on meeting people exactly where they are in their healing process, rather than pushing them toward places they are not yet ready to reach.
At The Counselor’s Couch, Madeline strives to create an environment where clients feel safe, welcomed, and at ease from the moment they walk through the door. She believes therapy should feel like a place where vulnerability can exist naturally, allowing individuals and families to explore their experiences with support, dignity, and care.
Madeline is independently licensed, a milestone that reflects years of advanced training, supervised clinical experience, and dedication to the field of social work. In addition to providing therapy, she oversees clinicians within the practice and offers clinical, supporting the professional growth and development of the counseling team.
In addition to her formal education, Madeline remains committed to continued professional growth through ongoing training, clinical development, and learning within the practice itself. She approaches therapy with an open and evolving mindset, believing that growth happens not only through education and research but also through meaningful connections with clients. Madeline values the opportunity to continually learn, adapt, and deepen her understanding so she can provide thoughtful and compassionate care.

“Rosey taking her job very seriously… supervising the office and making sure everyone receives the proper amount of comfort and tail wags.”
-
Rosey has been part of our counseling family for the past two years. She is a hypoallergenic, fun loving, and a playful therapy dog who spends her days greeting clients and supporting our team. Rosey has a special way of easing nerves and bringing smiles, helping both staff and clients feel more comfortable within the therapeutic space.
Our office and practitioners believe healing happens best in safe and welcoming environments. Rosey helps create a warm atmosphere that gently reminds everyone that our practice is not a typical office. Her presence helps clients
-
• Greets clients and helps create a calm, welcoming environment
• Offers comfort during difficult or emotional moments
• Brings moments of laughter and lightness to the day
• Helps clients feel more relaxed during sessions
• Connects with both staff and clients, adding warmth to our community -
Therapy dogs can help reduce anxiety, ease stress, and make counseling spaces feel more comfortable for many individuals. Their presence can help people relax, regulate emotions, and feel more open during conversations. For some clients, simply having a calm and friendly animal nearby makes the process of starting therapy feel less intimidating and more supportive.
-
Rosey is primarily located in Melissa’s office, where she spends most of her time supporting sessions and greeting visitors. However, she may also be requested to provide comfort in other clinicians’ offices within the agency when appropriate. If you believe Rosey’s presence would be helpful during your session, please feel free to let your clinician know.
